Poland secures a second European title in a multi-nation tournament
In short: The 2023 Men's European Volleyball Championship was a complex logistical feat. Spanning four nations and 76 matches, the tournament saw Poland rise to the top, defeating the host nation Italy in a decisive 3–0 final to claim their second championship title.
The 34th edition of the championship was a significant undertaking, contested across eight venues in Italy, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and Israel. The selection of hosts was marked by geopolitical shifts; while Bulgaria, Italy, and North Macedonia were confirmed as co-hosts in May 2022, Ukraine was forced to relinquish its hosting rights due to the ongoing war. Israel was subsequently announced as the fourth co-host in October 2022. To support the Group D stages in Israel, the CEV made an unprecedented €1,500,000 donation to ensure smooth operations, a figure that sits within the general range of €600,000 to €2,000,000 spent by the other host nations.
The tournament structure involved 24 teams divided into four pools. The seeding process was designed to distribute host nations and top-ranked teams effectively. For instance, Italy was placed in Pool A, Bulgaria in Pool B, North Macedonia in Pool C, and Israel in Pool D. The top three finishers from the tournament earned qualification for the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship, though Italy had already secured a spot as the defending world champions.
In the final held on 16 September 2023, Poland defeated Italy 3–0 to secure their second European title. This victory was a significant achievement for the 'White and Reds,' who had previously earned their only European gold medal in 2009. Wilfredo León was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP). While Italy entered the tournament as the reigning European and world champions, they ultimately fell short in the gold medal match held in Rome.
