How a Brooklyn rapper traded street credibility for a prison sentence
In short: Daniel Hernandez, known as 6ix9ine, built a career on aggressive rap and viral social media trolling. But his pursuit of street credibility led to a dangerous entanglement with the Nine Trey Gangsters, eventually forcing him to choose between his persona and his freedom.
The rise of 6ix9ine was marked by a deliberate shift in musical identity. After building a following in Europe with a punk-rap aesthetic, Hernandez sought to conquer his hometown of New York by adopting a gangster rap sound. This rebranding was fueled by his 2017 breakout single "Gummo," which peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned platinum certification from the RIAA.
However, this pursuit of authenticity led to a complex and perilous double life. Through his association with the Nine Trey Gangsters, Hernandez gained what he described as career credibility and protection, while providing financial compensation to gang members like Kifano "Shotti" Jordan. While Hernandez later testified that he was being extorted by the group, critics and journalists observed him acting as a "cash cow" for the gang while simultaneously using social media feuds to drive record sales.
The tension between his public persona and private reality culminated in a high-stakes legal battle. Law enforcement arrested Hernandez and ten Nine Trey Gangsters associates in 2018 on racketeering and multiple felony charges. In December 2019, Hernandez received a two-year prison sentence after deciding to turn state's evidence against the gang. This decision to act as an informant resulted in widespread condemnation and social ostracization from many in the hip-hop community.
Despite the controversy, Hernandez has maintained a presence in the industry, with singles like "Trollz" reaching number one on the Hot 100 in 2020. His career remains a study in the intersection of digital fame, gang affiliation, and the high cost of manufactured street credibility.
