How a sudden conflict reshaped the 2026 WRC2 Championship calendar
In short: The 2026 WRC2 season was meant to span fourteen rounds across four continents. However, geopolitical shifts and scheduling changes forced the FIA to rewrite the rules and reduce the championship to just thirteen rounds, fundamentally altering how drivers could secure their final standings.
The 2026 FIA WRC2 Championship, the second-highest tier of international rallying, was originally designed by WRC Promoter GmbH to feature fourteen rounds. This ambitious schedule was intended to take competitors through Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia. However, the season was ultimately reduced to thirteen rounds following the removal of the Rally Saudi Arabia from the calendar in September 2026.
The removal of the Saudi Arabian round was a direct consequence of the 2026 Iran war. This sudden vacancy left the championship without its scheduled finale. While organizers reportedly considered an all-gravel round in Catalonia, Spain, as a potential replacement, the opportunity was lost when the deadline for confirmation was not met. This disruption necessitated a significant change in the championship's scoring mechanism.
In the original format, a driver's final classification was determined by their best six scores from seven nominated rallies. To accommodate the reduced schedule, the FIA modified the regulations, reducing the requirement to the best five scores from seven rounds. Throughout the season, teams competed using cars that complied with Group Rally2 regulations and utilized tyres provided by Hankook. To be eligible for points in the Teams' Championship, a team was required to enter two crews.
The season also saw several logistical shifts. The Croatia Rally returned to the championship after a one-year absence in 2025, moving its headquarters from Zagreb to Rijeka. Additionally, the Acropolis Rally relocated its base to Loutraki after five years in Lamia. Although the Rally di Roma Capitale will take over the Rally Italia Sardegna starting in 2027, the latter will finish the 2026 season this October.
