In short: In the fictional Bad City, a lonesome vampire roams the streets, turning the tables on those who prey on the vulnerable. Directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, this black-and-white stylistic hybrid blends spaghetti Western tropes with Iranian culture, creating a feminist antihero who finds power in the shadows of the night.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, released in 2014, is a Persian-language horror Western that reimagines the vampire mythos. Written and directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, the film follows a mysterious young woman in a chador who acts as a vigilante against the predatory men of Bad City. By casting a female vampire as the primary agent of power, the film subverts traditional horror tropes where women are typically the targets of nighttime violence. Instead, the protagonist roams freely, unafraid and lethal, effectively flipping the implications of the film's title.

The production itself was a creative workaround to avoid the strict censorship and permit requirements of filming in Iran. Amirpour shot the movie over twenty-four days in Taft, California, using anamorphic lenses and a high-contrast monochrome aesthetic to capture a bleak, otherworldly atmosphere. The visual language draws heavy inspiration from graphic novels and German Expressionist classics like Nosferatu, while the narrative structure pays homage to the spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone. The result is a moody, atmospheric piece that prioritizes emotion and style over conventional plotting.

Beyond its genre-bending aesthetic, the film carries subtle political undercurrents. Amirpour has noted that the character of Rockabilly, a background figure on the fringes of the city, serves as a commentary on the lack of acceptance for gay individuals in Iran. The project was partially financed through a 2012 Indiegogo campaign, which raised $56,903 from 290 backers. Since its premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, the film has garnered critical acclaim, with reviewers praising its originality and its status as a striking debut for its director.
