Can a magical mask help a teenager navigate the complexities of unrequited love?
In short: In the animated film A Whisker Away, a 14-year-old girl discovers a supernatural way to escape her painful reality. By transforming into a cat, she gains unprecedented access to her crush's private life, but she soon learns that trading humanity for feline freedom carries a heavy, irreversible price.
Set in the real-world town of Tokoname, A Whisker Away follows Miyo Sasaki, a middle-schooler struggling with family tension and a one-sided crush on her classmate, Kento Hinode. When a mysterious mask seller offers her a magical Noh mask, Miyo gains the ability to transform into a cat named Tarō. This secret identity allows her to comfort Hinode as he grapples with the closure of his family's pottery shop, offering her a closeness she cannot achieve as a human.
The narrative takes a dark turn when Miyo, rejected by Hinode in a public moment of humiliation, decides to abandon her human life entirely. Her face literally falls off, becoming a porcelain mask that the seller intends to give to another cat. As Miyo begins to lose her human consciousness, she realizes the gravity of her choice. The film explores themes of identity and connection, as Miyo’s friends and a repentant Hinode race to the secret island of cats to rescue her from a permanent transformation.
Directed by Junichi Sato and Tomotaka Shibayama, the 2020 film was produced by Studio Colorido. Originally intended for a theatrical release on June 5, 2020, the project was shifted to a digital debut on Netflix on June 18, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film has been well-received by critics, holding a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Beyond its visual charm, the story serves as a poignant look at the lengths we go to for acceptance, ultimately emphasizing the importance of facing one's own life, flaws and all, rather than hiding behind a mask.
