In short: A dragon raised by cats becomes a symbol of vengeance and transformation. What started as a series of web stories has grown into a multi-media franchise with over one million copies in circulation, exploring the complex bond between domesticity and wild power.

The narrative of 'The Cat and the Dragon' (Neko to Ryū) centers on a dragon hatched in a cave inhabited by a family of cats. The mother cat chose to raise the dragon as her own offspring. As the dragon matured, he remained devoted to his feline guardians, eventually vowing to protect them from the outside world. This devotion turned into a violent crusade of revenge after he witnessed humans killing cats for their fur, leading him to hunt down the adventurers responsible.

A pivotal shift occurs when the dragon encounters another cat that evokes memories of his upbringing. This interaction prompts a fundamental change in his nature, causing him to develop a cat-like appearance. The story also introduces a cait sith who manages a forest of magical beasts and cats, serving as a mentor and familiar to a character named Anne Rosa. This blend of domestic affection and mythological scale provides the core emotional conflict of the series.

The series' trajectory highlights the modern lifecycle of Japanese media. It debuted on the user-generated platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō between September 2013 and June 2014. By April 2016, it was acquired by Takarajimasha for publication as a light novel. The franchise expanded into a manga in September 2017 and an anime series in July 2026. As of April 2025, the series had reached a significant milestone of over 1 million copies in circulation.

The anime adaptation, produced by OLM and directed by Oh Jin-Koo, premiered on July 4, 2026. It features music by Takahiro Obata and themes centered on the concept of 'home.' Following the first season's conclusion, a second season is scheduled for 2027, cementing the work's transition from a niche web novel to a major commercial property.
