In short: Set in 14th-century Aquitaine, A Plague Tale: Innocence follows two siblings fleeing the Inquisition and a supernatural plague. This stealth-driven adventure blends survival horror with a deep focus on family bonds, challenging players to navigate a world where light is the only barrier between them and a ravenous, shifting tide.

Developed by Asobo Studio and released in 2019, the game marked a significant shift for the team, moving toward a narrative-heavy experience. Drawing inspiration from titles like the 2013 survival game The Last of Us and the 2013 puzzle-adventure Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, the developers prioritized emotional stakes over pure action. The story centers on 15-year-old Amicia de Rune and her five-year-old brother, Hugo, as they navigate the Hundred Years' War. Their journey is defined by the Prima Macula, a supernatural affliction in Hugo's bloodline that grants him control over the rats that are devastating France.

The game's technical ambition is most visible in its rendering of the rat swarms. To manage up to 5,000 rats on-screen simultaneously without compromising performance, the developers utilized a tiered system of detail. Rats near the player are fully animated, while those in the distance are rendered as static background meshes. This technical trickery allows the environment to feel claustrophobic and dangerous, forcing the player to use fire, slings, and alchemical tools to manipulate the swarms and evade Inquisition soldiers.

Beyond the mechanics, the game explores the erosion of innocence. Hugo, voiced by Logan Hannan, begins as a sheltered child but gradually adapts to the brutality of his environment, often mirroring the player's own tactical choices. Charlotte McBurney, who voiced Amicia, worked closely with the writers to refine dialogue and character motivations. This collaborative approach helped ground the supernatural plot in a believable sibling dynamic, ensuring that the central theme—the resilience of family under extreme duress—remains the core of the player's experience.

The title achieved commercial success, selling over one million units by July 2020. Its impact extended beyond gaming, with a television adaptation announced in 2022. While the original game concluded the siblings' initial struggle against the Grand Inquisitor Vitalis, the story continued in the 2022 sequel, A Plague Tale: Requiem, further expanding the lore of the Macula and the dark history of the de Rune family.
