Inside the high-stakes world of Mexican lucha libre's premier three-man wrestling championship
In short: In the vibrant landscape of Mexican professional wrestling, the AAA World Trios Championship stands as a prestigious prize for teams of three. Since its inception in 2011, this title has defined the careers of dozens of athletes, showcasing the unique athleticism and dramatic flair inherent to the Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide promotion.
The championship was officially established in May 2011, with the inaugural winners crowned following an intense eight-team single-elimination tournament that concluded on June 18, 2011. The first team to hold the belts was Los Perros del Mal, consisting of Damián 666, Halloween, and X-Fly. Since that debut, the title has seen significant turnover, with 20 distinct reigns recorded among 17 different teams, alongside three periods where the championship remained vacant.
The history of the title is marked by diverse records and notable competitors. El Nuevo Poder del Norte holds the record for the most reigns by a team, having secured the championship three times. Individually, seven wrestlers share the record for the most reigns, including Averno, Chessman, and Psycho Clown. The title has also seen intergender participation, with teams like Los Apaches and Los Mercenarios claiming the gold. The age range of champions is equally broad, spanning from El Hijo del Vikingo, who won at 21 years and 217 days, to El Apache, who held the title at 57 years and 323 days.
Longevity and brevity define the competitive nature of the division. Los Psycho Circus established the longest reign in the championship's history, holding the belts for 846 days. In contrast, the shortest reign belongs to El Nuevo Poder del Norte, lasting only 33 days. As of September 11, 2026, the championship is held by a new iteration of Los Perros del Mal, featuring Daga, Angel, and Berto. They captured the title from Los Psycho Circus during the first night of Triplemanía 34, held in Paradise, Nevada, marking a new chapter for this storied wrestling accolade.
