From high school standout to NFL rookie: the rise of Abdul Carter
In short: Abdul Carter's journey from North Philadelphia to the New York Giants is a study in rapid ascent and public scrutiny. After becoming a unanimous All-American at Penn State, his transition to the professional ranks has been marked by elite production, disciplinary hurdles, and a high-profile legal incident.
Abdul Carter's path to the NFL was defined by early dominance in Pennsylvania. A four-star recruit from La Salle College High School, he chose Penn State over major programs like South Carolina and Ole Miss. His collegiate career began with a notable ejection for targeting in his debut against Purdue, but he quickly established himself as a premier linebacker. By 2024, Carter reached the pinnacle of college football, earning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors and unanimous All-American status after a season where he recorded 56 tackles and led his team with 6.5 sacks.
The transition to the NFL in 2025 saw Carter become one of the most highly valued prospects, selected third overall by the New York Giants. He signed a fully-guaranteed four-year contract worth $45.2 million on May 22, 2025. However, his rookie campaign has been characterized by a volatile mix of performance and discipline. While he struggled for impact during the first 12 games—recording only half a sack and one tackle for loss—he surged in December, finishing at least half a sack in every game to earn fifth place for the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Beyond the gridiron, Carter's public profile has been shaped by personal controversies and cultural identifiers. In April 2024, he faced misdemeanor charges for an assault on a tow truck driver that resulted in a fractured rib; this led to a year-long intervention program. Despite these hurdles, Carter maintains a distinct persona, identifying as Muslim and adopting the 'Darth Vader' moniker, which he displays on his eye black during games.
