How a single K-pop girl group shattered first-day sales records
In short: Since their 2020 debut, Aespa has moved from digital singles to massive physical phenomena. From chart-topping hits to unprecedented pre-order numbers, discover how this South Korean group redefined the scale of global music consumption and physical album sales.
The trajectory of Aespa, a South Korean girl group, is marked by rapid commercial expansion. Since debuting on November 17, 2020, with the single "Black Mamba," the group has built an extensive discography including two studio albums, seven EPs, five single albums, and twenty-two singles. Their early momentum was solidified in May 2021 with "Next Level," which reached number two on the Circle Digital Chart and the K-pop Hot 100. Beyond their singles and EPs, the group's extensive catalog also features nine soundtracks and two promotional singles. This diverse repertoire has allowed them to maintain a consistent presence across various media platforms.
The group's impact on the physical market became undeniable with the release of their first EP, Savage, in October 2021. The release sold 787,600 copies, establishing itself as the best-selling debut physical release for an SM Entertainment act at that time. Global recognition followed the primary single, which secured the group's initial top 40 position on the Billboard Global 200.
Subsequent releases demonstrated even greater scale. Their second EP, Girls, released in July 2022, sold 1,844,376 copies and reached number three on the Billboard 200. This upward trend culminated in May 2023 with the release of My World. With 1.8 million pre-orders, this third EP moved 1,372,929 units during its debut day, establishing a K-pop girl group record for opening-day sales.
While their physical EPs drive massive sales, the group also utilizes single albums, which are released exclusively in digital formats to promote their headlining tours.
