How a Florida punk band survived internal shifts and a global pandemic to endure
In short: Formed in 1997, Against Me! evolved from a solo project into a defining force in American punk. Despite lineup instability, a major label transition, and the profound personal transformation of frontwoman Laura Jane Grace, the band maintained its raw intensity. Today, the group remains on an indefinite hiatus, yet their legacy persists.
Founded by Laura Jane Grace in Naples, Florida, the band quickly established a reputation for relentless touring and DIY ethics. By the early 2000s, they had transitioned from self-released demos to the Billboard charts, with albums like 2007's New Wave and 2010's White Crosses marking their commercial peak. Throughout this period, the band navigated frequent personnel changes, including the departure of longtime drummer Warren Oakes in 2009 and the arrival of various collaborators who shaped their evolving sound.
The band's trajectory shifted significantly in 2012 when Grace publicly shared her experience as a trans woman. This period of personal transition coincided with intense professional uncertainty, yet it culminated in the 2014 release of Transgender Dysphoria Blues. The album, which Grace produced herself at her own Total Treble Studio, became the band's highest-charting record, reaching no. 23 on the Billboard 200. It served as an autobiographical exploration of gender dysphoria, cementing the band's reputation for uncompromising, vulnerable songwriting.
Despite a successful 2019 tour and the return of bassist Andrew Seward, the group's momentum stalled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The band played their final show in March 2020 at the Port City Music Hall before entering an indefinite hiatus. While members have since pursued solo projects and other musical ventures, Grace has maintained that the band never officially dissolved. Following a reunion at her wedding, she remains optimistic about a future return, though the exact timing for a potential eighth studio album remains uncertain.
