How a California singer transformed a Florida band's future
In short: In 2004, a post-hardcore band from Tampa was looking for a frontman. Through the digital reach of MySpace, they found a guitarist from California whose voice would not only define their underground success but eventually launch a global electronic music icon.
Formed in Tampa, Florida, in November 1999, From First to Last began with a lineup including Matt Good, Scott Oord, and Parker Nelms. The band's early years were defined by constant evolution, moving from small Florida shows to a heavy touring schedule across the United States by 2003. A pivotal moment occurred when Matt Good, seeking a frontman to better connect with audiences, used MySpace to contact Sonny Moore, a musician from California.
Moore initially arrived in Valdosta, Georgia, to serve as a rhythm guitarist for the recording of the album *Dear Diary, My Disteen Angst Has a Bodycount*. However, the band's members were so struck by his singing voice that he was transitioned to lead vocals. This era saw significant commercial momentum; by 2008, the band had amassed over 20 million streams on MySpace, and their first two albums had sold a combined 304,000 copies in the U.S.
The band's trajectory was marked by significant instability. In February 2007, Moore left to pursue a solo career, a move driven by the immense physical strain his singing placed on his vocal cords. He would later find global fame under the alias Skrillex. Following his departure, the band faced a period of crisis, losing their label, Capitol Records, and navigating frequent lineup changes involving members like Travis Richter and Matt Manning. Despite these shifts, the band has continued to reform and release music, maintaining a legacy rooted in the post-hardcore scene.
