How a single local gig led to a major record deal
In short: In 2015, the post-hardcore band Movements played just one show before signing with Fearless Records. From playing in skateparks to reaching the Billboard charts, their rapid rise was fueled by deeply personal lyrics exploring mental health, family tension, and the complexities of human connection.
Formed in January 2015 in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, by guitarist Brett Chiodo and vocalist Patrick Miranda, Movements quickly expanded to include drummer Spencer York and bassist Austin Cressey. The band gained rapid traction; following the 2015 early releases of "Protection" and "Buried", they signed a three-album contract with Fearless Records in August 2015, having performed just once live. The group's initial lineup also featured drummer Spencer York. They secured this deal after performing an opening set for Have Mercy.
The band's sound is a blend of post-hardcore, alternative rock, soft grunge, and spoken word, often associated with the emo revival movement. This stylistic fusion is deeply intertwined with the personal experiences of vocalist Patrick Miranda. His struggles with anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder heavily inform the band's lyrical themes, which also frequently touch upon heartbreak and strained parental relationships. Their musical style is frequently linked to the emo revival scene. Their music blends spoken word with alternative rock, soft grunge, and post-hardcore.
Since their debut, the band has maintained a prolific output. Their 2017 album, Feel Something, produced by Will Yip, reached number 190 on the Billboard 200 and number two on the Billboard Top New Artist Albums Chart. Following a lineup change in January 2016, when Ira George replaced Chiodo, the band has continued to evolve through releases like No Good Left to Give (2020) and RUCKUS! (2023). Their music often serves a purpose beyond entertainment; for instance, their 2018 music video for "Deadly Dull" partnered with the Alzheimer's Association to raise awareness for the disease, a subject Miranda explored due to his grandmother's diagnosis. The band's discography includes the EP Outgrown Things. Their 2017 tour included performances at the Warped Tour.
