In short: Developed by Leonardo, the AW149 is a medium-lift helicopter engineered for survivability and multi-mission flexibility. From troop transport to combat search and rescue, this rotorcraft features an open-system architecture that allows operators to integrate custom mission equipment, ensuring it remains effective in evolving, high-stakes military and civil operational theaters.

The AW149 programme was publicly unveiled at the 2006 Farnborough Air Show, with its maiden flight occurring in November 2009. Designed as a dedicated military rotorcraft, it prioritizes battlefield survivability, low through-life support costs, and high availability. Compared to its predecessor, the AW139, the AW149 features a larger fuselage and more powerful engines, enabling increased cargo volume and payload capacity. The aircraft is built with a crashworthy, damage-tolerant airframe and self-sealing fuel tanks, ensuring it can operate safely in demanding conditions.

Technologically, the AW149 is defined by its fully-digital four-axis automatic flight control system and open-system avionics, which provide customers with the flexibility to incorporate future mission systems. It is capable of single or dual-pilot operations in all weather conditions, day or night. The cabin is designed for rapid egress and equipment loading, accommodating up to 15 troops on crashworthy seats. With a cruise speed of 160 knots and a five-bladed main rotor that minimizes noise and vibration, the platform is well-suited for roles ranging from medical evacuation to armed escort.

The helicopter has seen significant international adoption. Thailand became the first export customer in 2015, while Egypt, Poland, and North Macedonia have also placed orders. In the United Kingdom, Leonardo secured a contract in February 2026 to supply 23 units for the New Medium Helicopter programme, with assembly planned for the Yeovil factory. Meanwhile, Malaysia recently signed a $3.5 billion contract to lease 28 units for various government agencies. These diverse deployments highlight the AW149's adaptability as a multi-role asset capable of fulfilling both combat and utility requirements across global defense forces.
