From a fish and chip shop to the cover of American Vogue
In short: Before she became an icon of the 2000s fashion scene, Agyness Deyn was a teenager in Lancashire with a penchant for skinhead haircuts. Her ascent from a local boutique model to a global runway fixture redefined the era, eventually leading her to pivot toward a career in acting and design.
Born Laura Michelle Hollins in 1983, Deyn grew up in the Rossendale Valley. Her path to fame began with a local modeling competition win in 1999, followed by a move to London where she balanced service jobs with her burgeoning fashion career. She was eventually discovered while shopping with designer Henry Holland, leading to a contract with SELECT Model Management. By May 2007, she had solidified her status as a top model, appearing on the cover of American Vogue alongside a cohort of other rising stars.
Deyn’s influence spanned high-fashion runways and commercial campaigns alike. She walked for major houses including Chanel, Versace, and Burberry, and served as the face of brands like Shiseido and Doc Martens. Her unique look and professional trajectory were so significant that Vogue Paris later ranked her among the thirty most important models of the decade. Despite this success, she began a gradual transition away from modeling around 2008, officially stepping back to pursue acting and design ventures.
Her post-modeling career has been diverse, encompassing stage and screen roles. She made her West End debut in 2012 and has appeared in films such as the 2012 remake of Pusher, the 2013 adaptation of Electricity, and the 2018 Netflix production The Titan. Beyond performance, she has explored design through collaborations with Uniqlo and Dr. Martens. Today, Deyn’s legacy remains tied to her transformative impact on the modeling industry during the 2000s, a period she navigated with a distinct, self-styled aesthetic.
