How a 2002 classic was reborn for a new generation of strategists
In short: Age of Mythology: Retold breathes new life into a beloved real-time strategy title. By combining the original's charm with modern visuals and a fully symphonic soundtrack, this remaster transforms a classic into a contemporary experience, offering players expanded control over gods and mythical creatures across diverse ancient worlds.
Ensemble Studios' 2002 classic has been extensively remastered in Age of Mythology: Retold, which launched for Xbox Series X/S and Windows on September 4, 2024. Co-developed by World's Edge, Tantalus Media, and Forgotten Empires, the remake utilizes the Bang Engine—the same technology behind Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition—to completely redo all animations and units.
The gameplay mechanics have seen significant modernization. Players can now manually activate myth unit abilities, though they can also be set to trigger automatically. The resource management system has been streamlined with an auto-economy feature called Villager Priority, and the population limit has been increased. Additionally, the game introduces ray tracing and a new Wonder Age that allows for cheaper god power casting.
The scope of the game's pantheons has expanded through significant DLC. While the base game features Greek, Egyptian, Norse, and Atlantean cultures, new content was introduced later. The Immortal Pillars expansion, released on March 4, 2025, added a reenvisioned Chinese pantheon, followed by the Heavenly Spear expansion on September 30, 2025, which introduced a new Japanese pantheon.
Despite a generally positive reception—including an 86% recommendation rate on OpenCritic—the remake has faced nuanced criticism. While Windows Central praised the faithful audio recreation and improved accessibility, some players felt the highly detailed new art style lacked the specific charm of the original. Other technical critiques focused on bugs, glitches, and pathfinding issues.
