In short: Agatha Raisin, a sharp and flawed former PR executive, trades the city for the quiet village of Carsley, only to find herself solving local mysteries. Based on M. C. Beaton's novels, this comedy-drama series balances witty crime-solving with the eccentricities of rural life, anchored by Ashley Jensen's performance as the titular lead.

The series began as a pilot, Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death, which premiered on 26 December 2014. Commissioned by Cameron Roach for Sky One, the production filmed in Biddestone, Wiltshire, starting in September 2014. Ashley Jensen, who portrays Agatha, described the character as a strong, independent, and driven woman who remains relatable because she is both funny and flawed. The show's tone has been described by critics in varied ways; while The Independent was critical of the writing, The New York Times called it delightful, and The Guardian praised the second series for being campy, kitsch, and silly.

The format of the show evolved significantly over its four series. While the first series consisted of eight 45-minute episodes, Acorn TV took over for the second series, shifting the format to three 90-minute films. This structure continued into the third series, which premiered on 28 October 2019 and featured four 90-minute episodes. A fourth series began filming in March 2021. The narrative world is populated by a recurring cast of characters, including Agatha's on-again, off-again love interest James Lacey, her aristocratic friend Sir Charles Fraith, and her former PR colleague Roy Silver.

The show is notable for its re-imagining of characters from the original book series. For example, DCI Denzel Wilkes is a re-imagined version of the book character DCI Wilkes, and the character of Jez Bloxby, played by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith in the pilot and Rhashan Stone thereafter, adapts the book character Alf Bloxby. The agency itself also evolves; by the third and fourth series, Agatha is joined by Toni Gilmour, a detective with an eidetic memory. These shifts in cast and format, alongside the show's blend of comedy and mystery, have sustained its run across multiple international markets, including DVD releases in regions 1, 2, and 4.
