In short: Alcest began in 2000 as a raw black metal solo project by Neige. Over two decades, it transformed into a genre-defining force, blending abrasive metal with the ethereal textures of shoegaze. This unique sound, known as blackgaze, serves as a musical bridge to the artist's childhood memories of another world.

Founded in Bagnols-sur-Cèze, Alcest was initially a three-piece black metal outfit featuring Neige, Aegnor, and Argoth. Following the 2001 release of their demo Tristesse hivernale, the band reverted to a one-man project led by Neige. It was the 2005 EP Le secret that marked a pivotal shift, moving away from minimalism and introducing the core concept that defines the band today: a musical adaptation of Neige's childhood experiences with a 'far off country' he calls Fairy Land.

The band's evolution is marked by a constant tension between metal and shoegaze. While early works like the 2007 debut Souvenirs d'un autre monde drew comparisons to Jesu and My Bloody Valentine, later albums pushed these boundaries further. The 2014 album Shelter famously abandoned all metal elements to fully embrace shoegaze, influenced by Neige's obsession with the band Slowdive. However, the 2016 follow-up Kodama saw a return to the band's signature blackgaze sound, incorporating influences from Japanese art and Hayao Miyazaki's film Princess Mononoke.

Today, Alcest is widely credited with pioneering the blackgaze genre, a style defined by atmospheric, uplifting tones, blastbeat sections, and screamed vocals layered over fast tremolo-picked guitars. The band's name, derived from the character Alceste in Molière's The Misanthrope, was chosen for its ethereal quality. With seven studio albums released, including 2024's Les Chants de l'aurore, the project continues to serve as a vehicle for Neige to guide listeners through his personal, otherworldly memories.

The project's longevity is supported by a stable lineup that expanded in 2009 when drummer Winterhalter joined, ending Neige's eight-year tenure as the sole full-time member. Despite the shifting musical landscapes—from the raw aggression of their early demo to the polished, atmospheric wall of sound on later records—Alcest remains a singular entity, consistently exploring the intersection of theatrical black metal and the enveloping, dreamy soundscapes of shoegaze.
