In short: Alexandra Billings is a trailblazing actress and educator who shattered barriers as one of the first openly transgender performers to star on Broadway. Her journey from the Chicago club scene to high-profile television roles and academic leadership highlights a career defined by both artistic excellence and persistent LGBTQ advocacy.

Born in 1962, Billings began her gender transition in 1980. Early in her career, she performed at the Baton Show Lounge in Chicago under the name Shanté, where she gained acclaim for her impersonations of icons like Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland. Her background in theater, influenced by her father’s work in opera, eventually led her to become a fixture in the Chicago theater scene, earning multiple Joseph Jefferson and After Dark awards. She later expanded her reach to television, gaining significant recognition for her recurring role as Davina in the Amazon series Transparent, which premiered in 2014.

Billings reached a historic milestone in 2019 when she was cast as Madame Morrible in the Broadway musical Wicked, becoming the first openly transgender person to star in that production. Her commitment to representation extends beyond the stage; she has been a vocal advocate for improved casting opportunities for transgender actors, notably participating in a 2017 open letter to Hollywood producers. Her work as an educator is equally extensive, having taught theater methods at institutions including the University of Southern California and California State University, Long Beach.

Throughout her life, Billings has navigated significant personal challenges, including homelessness and addiction in her youth, and a diagnosis of HIV in 1985. She credits her wife, Chrisanne, with providing the support necessary to survive these hardships. As an activist, Billings consistently urges the LGBTQ community to move beyond complacency, frequently using her public platform—whether at award ceremonies or university commencements—to challenge audiences to engage in difficult conversations and mentor the next generation of activists. In 2022, she documented her experiences in her memoir, This Time for Me.
