From Silicon Valley's unofficial uniform to an AI infrastructure pivot
In short: Once the minimalist staple of the tech elite, Allbirds has undergone a radical transformation. After years of navigating sustainability controversies, declining sales, and a failed expansion into apparel, the footwear brand is abandoning its wool roots to pursue a future in artificial intelligence.
Founded in 2015 by Tim Brown and Joey Zwillinger, Allbirds rose to prominence by leveraging a sustainability-first identity. The brand's early success was fueled by a $119,000 Kickstarter campaign and a design language that resonated with Silicon Valley professionals. Using materials like merino wool, eucalyptus, and sugarcane-based SweetFoam, the company positioned itself as an 'anti-larfashion' brand, prioritizing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles over fleeting trends.
However, the company's journey through the 2020s was marked by significant volatility. Following a 2021 IPO on the Nasdaq, Allbirds struggled with declining annual sales and a failed diversification into apparel, such as $250 puffer jackets and $88 dresses. The brand faced criticism regarding 'greenwashing' and legal challenges, including a 2021 lawsuit, Dwyer v. Allbirds, Inc., which alleged misleading sustainability claims. While the court eventually dismissed the case, the company's reputation for durability and its status as a 'tech bro' uniform began to wane.
The most dramatic shift occurred in 2026. After announcing the sale of its shoe business and all assets to American Exchange Group for $39 million in March, the company began a series of rebrandings. Initially announcing a pivot to AI cloud infrastructure as 'NewBird AI' in April 2026, the company rebranded again in June 2026 as 'Smartbird' under the leadership of new CEO Nadia Carlsten. This represents a total departure from its origins in New Zealand wool and sustainable footwear.
