In short: Pakistan's second-largest city is getting a terminal that looks like a blooming flower. The expansion of Allama Iqbal International Airport isn't just a logistical upgrade; it is a deliberate fusion of local history and international design, intended to mirror the national flower of Pakistan.

The airport's evolution is a story of rapid modernization. Originally, Lahore was served by Walton Airport, but it lacked the capacity to handle the jet aircraft acquired by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). This led to the construction of a new site in 1962 on a runway airbase. This new facility was specifically designed to accommodate the Boeing 747, finally opening Lahore to international flights and establishing direct routes to destinations like Dubai and London.

The current expansion, which began in 2024 and is slated for completion by October 2026, represents a significant aesthetic shift. While the original terminal building features Mughal architectural characteristics, the new design incorporates a blend of Spanish and Mughal styles. The layout is inspired by the Jasmine flower, known locally as "Chambeli," with the terminal's four arms designed to resemble four platters of the blossom.

This international collaboration is tangible in the project's pedigree. Spanish firm GilBartolomé Architects created the design after TYSPA International, the company that enlarged the Madrid and São Paulo airports, secured the contract. The construction is a joint venture between Pakistani firms Habib Construction Services and Matracon, and the Chinese firm CCECC. The project aims to increase annual passenger capacity from 6 million to 20 million, accommodating demand for the next 15 to 20 years.

Beyond the aesthetics, the airport serves as a vital hub for regional travel and maintenance. It hosts a dedicated aircraft line maintenance facility for Etihad Airways, providing technical checks for hydraulic structures and instruments. The expansion also includes a three-story parking facility and a conversion of the current parking area into arrival and departure lounges, ensuring the infrastructure keeps pace with the region's growing demand.
