From Iowa State standout to NFL journeyman, the career trajectory of Allen Lazard
In short: Allen Lazard transitioned from a record-breaking college career at Iowa State to a professional tenure marked by resilience and high-profile partnerships. After entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent, he navigated multiple team changes and injury setbacks to become a consistent, albeit fluctuating, presence in professional football.
Born in 1995, Lazard established himself as a dominant force at Iowa State, where he remains the program's all-time leader in both receptions and receiving yards. His collegiate success culminated in a standout 2016 season, during which he recorded over 1,000 receiving yards and earned first-team All-Big 12 honors. Despite his collegiate accolades, he went undrafted in 2018, initially signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars before finding a foothold with the Green Bay Packers later that year.
Lazard's time in Green Bay was defined by his chemistry with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. He emerged as a reliable target, notably catching the pass that allowed Rodgers to surpass Brett Favre's franchise touchdown record in 2021. His production peaked during that season with 40 receptions and eight touchdowns. However, his tenure was also punctuated by challenges, including a 2020 core muscle surgery and a 2021 fine for violating league COVID-19 protocols.
In 2023, Lazard secured a significant four-year deal worth $44 million with the New York Jets, a move widely interpreted as a strategic effort to facilitate Rodgers' arrival in New York. The partnership faced immediate disruption when Rodgers suffered a season-ending injury in the first week. Lazard's performance fluctuated significantly thereafter, leading to his eventual release by the Jets in December 2025. His career reflects the volatility of the professional game, where success is often tethered to team dynamics and health.
