The rise and fall of a college football legend turned NFL cornerback
In short: Alphonso Smith was a record-breaking defensive star at Wake Forest who reached the NFL draft as a high-profile second-round pick. Yet, his professional trajectory became a cautionary tale of high-stakes trades and on-field volatility, eventually leading to a life that ended in tragedy at the age of forty.
Born in Pahokee, Florida, in 1985, Alphonso Smith Jr. emerged as a standout athlete, excelling as both a quarterback and cornerback in high school. His collegiate career at Wake Forest University between 2004 and 2008 remains legendary. Smith was a consensus All-American who set the Atlantic Coast Conference record for career interceptions with 21. His senior season in 2008 was particularly dominant, as he tied for the national lead in both interceptions and pass breakups, earning him status as a finalist for the prestigious Bronko Nagurski Trophy.
In 2009, the Denver Broncos traded their 2010 first-round pick to select Smith 37th overall. This decision became infamous in Denver, as the traded pick was ultimately used by the Seattle Seahawks to draft Pro Bowler Earl Thomas. Smith's NFL tenure included stints with the Broncos and the Detroit Lions. His time in Detroit was marked by a dramatic 2010 Thanksgiving game against the New England Patriots, where his decision to taunt Tom Brady preceded a collapse that saw the Lions surrender 24 unanswered points. Smith was eventually benched during that game and later took public responsibility for the outcome.
Following his professional football career, Smith's life faced significant turbulence. In 2015, he was dismissed from his role as head coach at Pahokee High School due to allegations of inappropriate conduct, and in 2016, he faced charges of domestic battery. Smith died by suicide in his hometown of Pahokee on September 2, 2026, at age 40. His story serves as a stark reminder of the immense pressures surrounding elite collegiate athletes and the often-unpredictable nature of professional sports transitions.
The financial stakes of his early career were substantial, with his 2009 contract totaling $4.08 million, including a $2.15 million signing bonus. Despite these early rewards, his professional legacy remains inextricably linked to the high-profile trade that defined his arrival in the NFL and the public struggles that followed his departure from the league.
