The firm that turns around the world's most distressed corporate giants
In short: Founded in 1981 by a Detroit accountant, AlixPartners pioneered the high-stakes world of corporate restructuring. From navigating the collapse of Enron to recovering billions in stolen assets, the firm operates in the shadows of global finance, specializing in fixing companies that are near death or facing massive systemic failure.
Jay Alix launched his namesake firm in Southfield, Michigan, with a singular focus: consulting for companies in or near bankruptcy. The firm gained early prominence in 1984 by securing $100 million for creditors during the collapse of the DeLorean Motor Co. Since then, it has evolved from a boutique operation into a global powerhouse, advising on some of the largest Chapter 11 reorganizations in history, including General Motors, Kmart, and Enron Corp.
The firm's reach extends far beyond traditional bankruptcy. Its work encompasses enterprise improvement, forensic investigations, and complex merger integration. In 2014, it began restructuring the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, unlocking $280 million for infrastructure. Its forensic reach is equally vast; the firm identified 13,000 investors impacted by the Bernie Madoff scandal and helped PrivatBank recover over $5 billion in assets allegedly misappropriated by former shareholders.
AlixPartners has navigated significant internal and external transitions. It has been owned by private equity firms like Hellman & Friedman and CVC Capital Partners, before returning to founder control alongside institutional investors in 2016. The firm is not without its own legal battles, including a long-running racketeering lawsuit brought by Jay Alix against McKinsey & Company regarding alleged conflicts of interest in bankruptcy courts. Despite these tensions, the firm continues to expand its footprint, acquiring specialized advisory groups and integrating advanced analytics platforms to maintain its position at the top of the restructuring industry.
