From child star to global pop icon, the complex trajectory of Mexico's Anahí
In short: Anahí Puente began her career at age two, eventually becoming a global phenomenon through the telenovela Rebelde and the band RBD. Beyond her massive musical success, she has navigated intense public scrutiny, health crises, and a high-profile marriage into Mexican politics, all while maintaining a career spanning four decades.
Born in 1983 in Mexico City, Anahí entered the entertainment industry as a toddler, appearing on the program Chiquilladas. Her early career was defined by consistent work in Mexican television, including an Ariel Award-winning performance as a child actress. However, her international breakthrough arrived in 2004 with the telenovela Rebelde, where she portrayed Mia Colucci. The show’s success catalyzed the formation of the musical group RBD, which became a global powerhouse, selling over 20 million albums and 17 million digital downloads worldwide.
Anahí’s life has been marked by significant personal and physical challenges. In the early 2000s, she battled severe eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa and bulimia, reaching a low weight of approximately 75 pounds. Her health struggles were life-threatening; in 2001, she suffered a cardiac arrest that lasted eight seconds. Later, in 2011, medical examinations revealed that a deviated septum was depriving her brain of oxygen, which doctors identified as a primary cause of her previous heart issues. Since her recovery, she has become a vocal advocate against eating disorders, participating in documentaries and campaigns to raise awareness.
Her transition into political life brought new forms of public attention. In 2015, she married Manuel Velasco Coello, then the Governor of Chiapas. Her role as the governor's wife drew criticism, particularly when she wore a dress costing 120,000 Mexican pesos during a public celebration, an act that sparked backlash given the economic conditions in Chiapas, the poorest state in Mexico. Despite these controversies and earlier legal investigations into her finances, Anahí has continued to balance her public image as a performer, entrepreneur, and global ambassador for initiatives like the Non-Violence Project, which honors the legacy of John Lennon.
