France's new Amiral Ronarc'h frigates are redefining naval power through modular, digital warfare technology.
In short: Designed to replace aging vessels, the Amiral Ronarc'h-class frigate is a compact, high-tech powerhouse. Featuring advanced digital radar and modular weapon systems, these ships are built for both French and international service. Their ability to integrate diverse technologies makes them a versatile solution for modern maritime security and air defense.
The Amiral Ronarc'h-class, also known as the Frégate de Défense et d'Intervention (FDI), represents a strategic shift for the French Navy. Launched in 2015, the program aims to produce five first-rank frigates that will eventually supersede the La Fayette class by 2035. These ships are designed to operate in crisis zones, complementing the existing Aquitaine and Horizon-class vessels. While the lead ship, Amiral Ronarc'h, was commissioned in 2026, the program has faced delays in fitting out and sea trials, pushing full service entry for the first French unit into 2027.
Technologically, the FDI is defined by its digital architecture. It features the SEA FIRE multi-function radar, which utilizes four fixed antennas to manage missions ranging from self-defense to extended air warfare. The ship's design is highly modular, allowing for significant upgrades. For instance, while initial French units were built with 16 Aster surface-to-air missile silos, later vessels and retrofitted ships will carry 32. To counter the growing threat of drones, all ships in the class are slated to receive Sadral Mistral Simbad-RC point defense systems.
The FDI's influence extends well beyond France. Greece has ordered three units, known as the Kimon class, which feature a more extensive weapons fit, including 32 Aster-30 missiles and RAM Block 2B launchers. The international appeal of the design is further evidenced by Sweden's decision in 2026 to procure FDI frigates, which will be customized with Swedish sensors and weapon systems like the RBS 15 anti-ship missile. This adaptability, combined with a compact displacement of 4,000 to 4,500 tonnes, makes the FDI a significant player in the export market, allowing France to maintain its domestic production capacities while meeting diverse global naval requirements.
