How a London teenager rose to the top of Olympic diving
In short: In 2020, at just sixteen years old, Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix became the youngest member of the Team GB diving squad. Since then, the British-French athlete has transitioned from a promising junior to an Olympic medalist and a dominant force on the 10-metre platform.
Born in London on 11 September 2004, Spendolini-Sirieix has rapidly ascended the ranks of international diving. Her breakthrough period arrived in 2022, a year in which she secured multiple titles, including two Commonwealth Games gold medals and two European senior championships. Notably, her victory in the individual 10-metre platform at the 2022 Commonwealth Games made her the first English woman to win that specific event since 1966.
Her technical precision was evident early in her career. During the 2020 FINA Diving Grand Prix in Rostock, she overcame a deficit in the first four rounds to secure gold with a final dive score of 76.80, finishing with a total of 330.50. This feat earned her the 2020 BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award, followed by another nomination in 2022.
The 2024 season marked her arrival as a global star. She achieved a triple medal success at the World Aquatics Championships, winning gold in the team event, followed by two bronze medals in the 10-metre platform and 10-metre synchronised platform events. She continued this momentum at the Paris Olympics, where she secured a bronze medal in the 10-metre synchronised event alongside Lois Toulson. The industry acknowledged her quick ascent by crowning her the 2024 European Aquatics’ Female Diver of the Year.
Beyond her athletic achievements, Spendolini-Sirieix carries a notable lineage; she is the daughter of French-born television personality Fred Sirieix and Alex Spendolini. During the 2024 Summer Olympics, her father served as a roving reporter for the BBC, providing a unique moment of connection when he interviewed his daughter following her Olympic success.
