In short: Once hailed as the ANC's Mr Clean, Andrew Feinstein resigned from the South African parliament in protest against systemic corruption. Today, he is a prominent campaigner against the global arms trade, challenging political establishments from Cape Town to London with a focus on transparency, accountability, and radical grassroots organizing.

Born in Cape Town to Holocaust survivors, Andrew Feinstein was deeply influenced by his mother's activism against apartheid. After studying economics and politics at the University of Cape Town, Berkeley, and Cambridge, he returned to South Africa in 1991 to join the African National Congress. As a member of parliament from 1994 to 2001, he earned a reputation as a principled reformer, chairing key finance committees and helping draft the Public Finance Management Act. However, his career took a sharp turn when he challenged the government's handling of a massive arms deal, leading to his resignation in 2001.

Feinstein's transition to investigative work culminated in his 2011 book, The Shadow World, which exposed the deep, often corrupt, entanglements between defense manufacturers, governments, and intelligence agencies. He famously estimated that the weapons trade accounts for roughly 40 percent of all corruption in global commerce. This work, which includes over 2,500 footnotes, was later adapted into an award-winning documentary. His activism has since expanded to include advocacy for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions strategy regarding Israel and critiques of British political culture.

In the United Kingdom, Feinstein has navigated a complex path within left-wing politics. After supporting Jeremy Corbyn's leadership, he stood as an independent candidate against Keir Starmer in the 2024 general election, finishing second. His recent efforts have focused on building grassroots movements like the Camden Community Alliance and participating in the formation of new political entities such as Your Party. Despite internal conflicts and shifting alliances, Feinstein remains a persistent, if controversial, voice calling for a departure from traditional party structures in favor of community-led, non-partisan political action.
