The Spear of the Nation: A South African political force built on internal volatility
In short: Founded in 2023 by former president Jacob Zuma, the uMkhonto weSizwe Party rapidly became a major South African political player. Despite its electoral success and status as the official opposition, the party is defined by its authoritarian internal structure, frequent leadership purges, and a complex, often contradictory ideological platform.
The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) emerged in September 2023, taking its name from the former paramilitary wing of the African National Congress (ANC). Its political trajectory was cemented in December 2023 when Jacob Zuma, while remaining an ANC member, declared he would vote for the new party. This move triggered a significant shift in the South African political landscape, leading to the ANC expelling Zuma in July 2024. By the 2024 general election, the party secured 14.58% of the national vote, granting it 58 seats in the National Assembly and the role of official opposition.
Ideologically, the party is a study in contradictions. While it claims a socialist identity, it simultaneously advocates for expanding the powers of traditional tribal monarchs and supports socially conservative policies, such as repealing same-sex marriage laws. Critics, including commentators in the Mail & Guardian, have characterized the party’s platform as a blend of Zulu nationalism, anti-foreigner sentiment, and predatory, authoritarian nationalism. The party also promotes controversial economic policies, most notably the expropriation of white-owned land without compensation.
Internally, the MKP operates through a centralized model where all top leadership positions are appointed directly by Zuma, with no internal elections held as of August 2025. This structure has been marked by extreme volatility. The party has seen constant infighting, frequent resignations, and rapid turnover in key roles. By March 2026, the party had already cycled through eight different secretaries-general. High-profile figures, including Zuma's own daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, have faced expulsion, while others have been caught in scandals involving alleged salary kickbacks or controversial military recruitment efforts. This atmosphere of instability persists even as the party maintains a strong regional power base in KwaZulu-Natal.
