How a teenage DJ became the youngest head of government in the world
In short: Andry Rajoelina rose from a career as a nightclub disc jockey to the presidency of Madagascar. His rapid ascent, fueled by the youth-oriented TGV movement, culminated in a controversial 2009 power transfer that international observers widely condemned as a coup, forever altering the nation's political landscape and constitutional history.
Born in 1974, Andry Rajoelina bypassed traditional political paths, first gaining prominence as a DJ and event promoter in Antananarivo. By 2007, he had transitioned into business and politics, founding the Tanora malaGasy Vonona (TGV) party. His election as Mayor of Antananarivo that year, at age 33, leveraged his youth as a symbol of renewal. However, his tenure was marked by immediate conflict with President Marc Ravalomanana, particularly after the government shuttered Rajoelina’s media outlet, Viva TV, in late 2008.
The ensuing political crisis reached a violent nadir on 7 February 2009, when security forces fired on protesters marching toward the presidential palace, killing at least 31 people. Following the unrest, Ravalomanana resigned and transferred power to a military directorate, which subsequently handed authority to Rajoelina. At 35, he became the youngest head of government globally. The international community, including the African Union and the United Nations, largely refused to recognize the transition, viewing it as an unconstitutional coup. This isolation led to significant economic strain, including the suspension of hundreds of millions of euros in international aid.
Rajoelina’s transitional authority eventually oversaw the adoption of a new constitution in 2010, which lowered the presidential age requirement to 35, effectively legitimizing his position. Despite his later electoral successes in 2018 and 2023, his career remained shadowed by allegations of human rights abuses during the 2009 crisis. Claims from military figures like Colonel Charles Andrianasoavina suggested that the 7 February massacre involved coordinated fire from buildings surrounding the palace, contradicting initial narratives. Ultimately, Rajoelina’s presidency ended in 2025 following widespread civil unrest, an impeachment, and a military seizure of power.
