The busiest airport in the world was once a tiny Atlantic rock
In short: In 1982, a remote speck in the Atlantic Ocean became the most active aviation hub on Earth. During the Falklands War, this military outpost served as the primary staging point for long-range bombing raids, handling a staggering volume of aircraft movements in a matter of months.
RAF Ascension Island, also known as Wideawake Airfield, serves as a critical joint military facility operated by the UK's Royal Air Force and the US Space Force. Its strategic importance dates back to 1939, when it first hosted a high-frequency direction finding station. By 1942, the US military constructed the airfield to support the Second World War effort, during which it served as a staging point for over 25,000 aircraft.
The base reached its zenith of activity during the 1982 Falklands War. It was used extensively to support Operation Black Buck, a series of long-range bombing raids conducted by Avro Vulcan bombers and Handley Page Victor tankers. At this time, Wideawake reached a global peak in aviation traffic, serving as a crucial stop for the Ministry of Defence's South Atlantic air bridge connecting the UK and the Falkland Islands.
Beyond its role in conventional warfare, the island is a cornerstone of space operations. It hosts a U.S. Space Force ground tracking station supporting the Eastern Range and rocket launches from Cape Canaveral. The site also features the 'Golf Ball' radar antenna, built between 1960 and 1961 for anti-ballistic missile measurements, and various stations for space communications and data transmission.
Maintenance of the facility is a complex international effort. While the RAF runs the airfield on a day-to-day basis with about 19 personnel, the US relies on private contractors for infrastructure. Recent years saw significant challenges, including a 2017 runway closure due to potholes that forced a shift to Dakar-based flights until repairs were completed in 2022.
