The schoolboy uniform that conquered the global rock charts
In short: He was an eight-year-old migrant from Glasgow, a high school dropout, and a part-time butcher's apprentice. Yet, through a signature schoolboy outfit and a high-voltage sound, Angus Young transformed AC/DC into one of the most influential forces in rock history.
The persona of Angus Young is one of rock's most enduring enigmas. While his energetic stage antics—including a version of Chuck Berry's duckwalk and intense, spontaneous jumps—suggest a wild spirit, much of his iconic image was born from necessity and family suggestion. His signature schoolboy look was actually suggested by his sister, Margaret, who also provided the original uniform. When that eventually wore out, Young simply repurposed his actual uniform from Ashfield Boys High School in Sydney.
This sense of adaptability extended to his musical beginnings. Born in Scotland in 1955, Young moved to Australia in 1963 following a particularly harsh Scottish winter. His musical foundation was built on a self-taught approach after just one lesson from his brother Alexander. His early gear was equally humble, ranging from a six-stringed banjo to a second-hand acoustic guitar purchased by his mother, eventually leading to his famous use of Gibson SG models.
The scale of his achievement is reflected in the staggering numbers behind AC/DC's discography. The 1980 release, Back in Black, became a global phenomenon, selling approximately 50 million copies and ranking as the second-highest-selling album worldwide, surpassed only by Michael Jackson's Thriller. Despite the band's various lineup changes and the loss of iconic vocalists like Bon Scott, Young has remained the sole continuous member, cementing his place as a legend of the genre.
