In short: Angela Hartnett is a culinary force who transformed from a history graduate into a Michelin-starred chef-patron. After enduring the high-pressure kitchens of Gordon Ramsay, she carved out her own identity through a portfolio of restaurants, television appearances, and a commitment to the hospitality industry that earned her an OBE.

Born in Kent in September 1968, Angela Hartnett was raised in a household shaped by her Irish father and her Italian mother, whose family had migrated from Bardi to the Welsh Rhondda Valley. Following her father's death when she was seven, the family moved to Upminster. Her early life was deeply influenced by her Italian grandmother, who cared for the children while her mother worked long hours. This domestic foundation preceded a year spent working as an au pair in Italy, an experience that preceded her graduation from Cambridge Polytechnic with a degree in history.

Hartnett's professional trajectory began in hotel kitchens in Cambridge and Barbados before she returned to the UK in 1994. Her career accelerated after a one-day trial at Aubergine, Gordon Ramsay's first restaurant. She worked six days a week alongside Ramsay and Marcus Wareing, enduring a demanding environment where Ramsay nicknamed her Dizzy Lizzy. She supported Ramsay’s expansion, including the launch of Verre in Dubai, before establishing her own reputation. In 2004, she earned her first Michelin star while serving as Chef-Patron at the Connaught in London.

Following the closure of the Connaught for restoration in 2007, Hartnett launched Murano in Mayfair in 2008, which subsequently secured a Michelin star and four AA Rosettes. Her business interests have since expanded to include multiple locations of Café Murano and collaborations like Merchant's Tavern. Beyond the kitchen, Hartnett has become a familiar face on British television, appearing on shows like Hell's Kitchen, Tomorrow’s Food, and Best Home Cook. Her contributions to the hospitality industry and her work supporting the National Health Service during the COVID-19 response were recognized with an OBE in 2022, following her earlier appointment as an MBE in 2007.
