From masked luchador to global star, the evolution of Angel Garza's wrestling career
In short: Born into a legendary Mexican wrestling dynasty, Angel Garza began his journey as a masked performer before stepping into the global spotlight. His career spans decades of high-stakes matches, championship reigns, and a high-profile transition from the independent circuit to the elite ranks of international professional wrestling.
Humberto Garza Solano, known professionally as Angel Garza, is a third-generation wrestler from Monterrey, Mexico. He debuted in 2008 as El Hijo del Ninja, an enmascarado or masked wrestler. His early career was defined by traditional lucha libre milestones, including winning the 2009 Copa Arena Coliseo Monterrey and securing multiple Lucha de Apuestas victories, where he famously wagered his mask against opponents' hair. In 2012, he made the unconventional decision to voluntarily unmask on national television during the finale of a reality dating show, permanently altering his public persona.
Garza's path took him through various promotions, including Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide and Impact Wrestling, before he signed with WWE in 2019. During his time in NXT, he captured the Cruiserweight Championship, marking a significant achievement in his transition to the American stage. His tenure on the main roster saw him navigate complex tag team dynamics, notably with Andrade and later his cousin Humberto Carrillo, with whom he formed the team Los Lotharios. His career has been marked by both individual accolades and collaborative efforts across different brands and promotions.
Beyond the ring, Garza's life has frequently intersected with his professional narrative. He famously proposed to journalist Zaide Lozano in the ring immediately after winning the NXT Cruiserweight Championship in 2019. As of 2025, his career continues to evolve, including a return to AAA following its acquisition by WWE. Throughout his journey, Garza has maintained his family's legacy while adapting to the shifting demands of the global wrestling industry, moving from the regional circuits of Nuevo León to the international stage.
