Can a classic political allegory survive a Hollywood makeover?
In short: The 2025 animated film Animal Farm: A Cautionary Tail attempts to modernize George Orwell’s 1945 masterpiece. But by trading Stalinist critique for corporate corruption and a celebrity-studded cast, has this new adaptation lost the very teeth that made the original legendary?
Directed by Andy Serkis and written by Nicholas Stoller, the 2025 film is the third major adaptation of Orwell’s novella. Unlike the 1954 animated version or the 1999 live-action film, this iteration introduces an original protagonist: a piglet named Lucky, voiced by Gaten Matarazzo. The narrative shifts the focus from the original's historical allegory of Stalinism toward a modern critique of corporate corruption, featuring a billionaire antagonist, Frieda Pilkington, played by Glenn Close.
The film's plot follows a rebellion on Manor Farm after the owner, Farmer Jones, loses the property to the bank. While the animals initially establish an autonomous government led by the sows Snowball and Napoleon, the power dynamic shifts as Napoleon, voiced by Seth Rines, assumes sole control. The story introduces new stakes, such as a monthly $1,000 debt to the bank, and explores how the pigs eventually adopt human-like luxuries, such as shopping at Pilkington's mall and wearing clothes.
Despite its high-profile cast—including Steve Buscemi, Woody Harrelson, and Laverne Cox—the film faced significant critical backlash. Critics from publications like The Guardian and the Associated Press accused the production of 'Disneyfication,' arguing that the 'audience-friendly' approach and a 'dumb happy ending' betrayed Orwell's original intent. Commercially, the film struggled, grossing approximately $6.5 million against a $35 million budget, and earned a 'C-' CinemaScore, the lowest grade ever recorded for an Angel Studios animated release.
