When the Okavango Delta runs dry, a rag-tag group of animals fights back
In short: In the 2010 animated feature Animals United, a meerkat and a vegetarian lion discover their home’s water supply has been diverted by a luxury resort. They assemble an international team of displaced animals to reclaim their habitat, challenging human greed in a story inspired by a classic 1949 literary work.
Released on 7 October 2010, the German production Animals United follows a meerkat named Billy and a lion named Socrates as they investigate why the Okavango Delta has stopped flowing. Their journey leads them to a dam constructed to power the Eden Paradise Hotel, a luxury resort hosting a climate conference. The film draws loose inspiration from a 1949 book by Erich Kästner and Walter Trier, marking the second time the story has been adapted for the screen following a 1969 2D-animated version.
The narrative centers on a diverse group of animals—including a polar bear, a kangaroo, and two ancient Galápagos tortoises—who have all suffered due to human interference. As they confront the hotel’s owner, Mr. Smith, and a poacher named Hunter, the film shifts from an adventure into a critique of environmental exploitation. The animals eventually organize a resistance, using a swarm of locusts to disrupt the human conference and successfully restoring the water flow to the Delta.
While the film achieved significant reach, with over 5 million visitors across Europe and a worldwide gross exceeding $50 million, critical reception was largely negative. Reviewers often criticized the production for prioritizing a heavy-handed message over engaging storytelling. Despite its commercial footprint and the involvement of a notable English-language voice cast, including James Corden and Stephen Fry, the project struggled to resonate with critics, holding a 25% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The production process, which ran from November 2008 to June 2010, utilized Autodesk software at the Hannover-based studio Ambient Entertainment. The film’s legacy includes a 2019 Netflix-exclusive sequel titled Pets United. Ultimately, the story serves as a fable about accountability, where the animals’ victory leads to the bankruptcy of the resort and a final push to hold humanity responsible for its impact on the natural world.
