The Soviet biplane that can fly backwards through the air
In short: Designed to replace the Polikarpov Po-2, the Antonov An-2 is a marvel of rugged simplicity. With automatic slats that deploy at low speeds, this legendary aircraft can fly as slow as 40 km/h—even allowing it to fly backwards relative to the ground in high winds.
The An-2's legendary performance stems from its deliberate lack of complexity. Its wing leading-edge slats are fully automatic, held shut by airflow and extended by elastic rubber springs when airspeed drops below 64 km/h. This mechanism allows for incredible short-field performance, with take-offs possible within just 170 meters and landings requiring only 215 meters. Such stability makes it ideal for unimproved runways, agricultural work, and even extreme cold weather environments.
Since its first prototype flight on 31 August 1947, the An-2 has seen massive production. While initial manufacturing occurred at State Factory 473 in Kyiv, much of the fleet—estimated at over 13,000 units—was built in Poland's WSK factory in Mielec. The aircraft's versatility is unmatched; variants have served as crop-dusters, water-bombers, air ambulances, and even paratrooper transports. It even saw combat roles, from the Korean War to being used as a makeshift bomber in the Croatian War of Estonia.
Despite its utility, the An-2 faces modern challenges. The decline in Avgas production in CIS countries has led to the development of the An-2-100, which uses kerosene-burning turboprops. While many Western nations prohibit its commercial use due to certification issues, the aircraft remains an asset in the developing world due to its low cost, with serviceable examples priced as low as US$30,000. Its era of dominance is only now facing a potential successor, as Russia looks toward the UZGA LMS-901 Baikal for future production.
