In short: Imagine bypassing gridlock by hopping into a silent, electric air taxi. Archer Aviation is building the hardware for this urban revolution, but the path from prototype to passenger service is proving much longer and more complex than the initial hype suggested.

Founded in 2018 by Adam Goldstein and Brett Adcock, Archer Aviation aims to deploy eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft for urban air taxi networks. The company's flagship production model, Midnight, is designed as a piloted, four-passenger vehicle capable of speeds up to 150 mph and a range of 100 miles. To support mass production, Archer partnered with the automaker Stellantis, which committed up to $150 million in equity to act as an exclusive contract manufacturer.

The vision for 'Urban Air Mobility' involves specific, high-traffic routes, such as connecting Newark Liberty International Airport to Manhattan, or O'Hare International to Chicago's near west side. Major airlines are already positioning themselves; United Airlines has placed a conditional order for 200 aircraft, even paying a $10 million deposit in 2022. However, the transition from experimental technology to a regulated commercial service has faced delays. While the company completed over 400 test flights in 2024, as of late 2026, the Midnight aircraft had not yet begun FAA Type Inspection Authorization testing or demonstrated flight with humans on board.

Despite these hurdles, Archer is expanding its global and operational footprint. The company has secured FAA Part 135 and Part 141 certifications and recently acquired Boeing subsidiaries Wisk Aero, Insitu, and Skygrid. Beyond the US, Archer is testing its technology in extreme environments, such as the high heat and dust of Abu Dhabi, and has partnered with Jetex to utilize private terminals in the United Arab Emirates. The company's ambitions even extend to defense and logistics through the 'Thunder' and 'Halo' variants, designed for heavy freight and maritime operations.
