In short: From her early days in Caracas to becoming a global producer for stars like Björk and Kanye West, Arca has redefined the boundaries of avant-pop. Her work blends intense psychosexuality, gender identity, and deconstructed club sounds, creating a unique sonic language that challenges both the listener and the industry.

Born in Caracas in 1989, Alejandra Ghersi Rodríguez—professionally known as Arca—began her creative journey producing electronic music on FL Studio as an adolescent. After a childhood stint in Connecticut, she returned to Venezuela before eventually attending the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music in New York. Her early career saw her collaborating with local acts like La Vida Bohème and releasing music under the moniker Nuuro. By 2012, she had launched her Arca project, quickly gaining attention for her experimental EPs and mixtapes like &&&&&.

Arca’s production prowess soon made her an essential collaborator for global icons. She contributed to Kanye West’s Yeezus in 2013 and became a frequent partner for Björk, co-producing albums such as Vulnicura and Utopia. Her own discography is equally expansive, ranging from the club-oriented sounds of Xen and Mutant to the ambitious five-part Kick series released between 2020 and 2021. Her 2026 album, XXXXX, marked a return to her experimental roots, blending classical composition with frenetic, Aphex Twin-inspired electronic textures.

Beyond music, Arca is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the intersection of the body and technology. She has incorporated themes of non-binary identity and trans womanhood into her output, particularly following her 2018 coming out. Her visual collaborations with artists like Jesse Kanda and Frederik Heyman often feature unsettling or explicit imagery, reflecting her interest in psychoanalysis. In recent years, she has expanded into painting, debuting her Angels series at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts in 2026, a practice she adopted to reconnect with her creativity after experiencing burnout.
