Before it was a modern nation, Arya defined a lineage, a language, and faith.
In short: The term Arya was once the foundational identity for Iranian peoples, weaving together ethnicity, language, and Zoroastrian belief. Though it faded after the Islamic conquest, this ancient endonym evolved through centuries of political transformation, eventually shaping the modern name of Iran and the identity of its people today.
In the pre-Islamic era, Arya served as a multifaceted marker of identity. During the Old Iranian period, being an Arya meant belonging to a specific lineage, speaking an Iranian language, and worshipping the supreme deity Ahura Mazda. This identity was not merely cultural but also defined by a sharp dichotomy against non-Iranian peoples, referred to as Anārya. Sacred texts like the Avesta highlight this divide, portraying the Aryas as a people apart, defined by shared religious practices and a common history that excluded neighboring groups like the Turyas.
The term’s political evolution is most visible in the Sassanian period, where it transformed into Ērān and Ērānshahr, meaning the dominion or realm of the Aryas. Kings adopted titles such as Shahanshah-i Eranshahr, or King of Kings of the Dominion of the Aryas, cementing the term’s role in statecraft. While the term fell out of common use following the Islamic conquest, it underwent a significant revival during the 9th-century Iranian Renaissance. During this time, the toponym Ērān was repurposed, eventually leading to the modern ethnonym Iranian as a linguistic back-formation.
The legacy of Arya persists in both historical records and modern nationalism. Achaemenid rulers like Darius the Great and Xerxes I used the term in their inscriptions to describe their lineage and the languages of their empire. Centuries later, in 1935, Reza Shah formally changed the international name of his country from Persia to Iran. His successor, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, later adopted the title Aryamehr, or light of the Aryans, marking the first official state use of the ancient term since the fall of the Sassanian Empire.
