The demonic mutant Azazel draws his name from ancient biblical lore and scripture
In short: Created by Chuck Austen and Sean Philips, the Marvel supervillain Azazel is an ancient, teleporting mutant who claims to be the original inspiration for Satan. Beyond his comic book origins, his name traces back to the Book of Enoch, where it first appears in chapter 8, verse 1.
Azazel belongs to the Neyaphem, an ancient group of demonic mutants who were long ago banished to the Brimstone Dimension by their rivals, the angel-like Cheyarafim. Because of his innate ability to teleport, Azazel can return to Earth for brief periods. His primary goal is to establish a permanent gateway to our world, a scheme that relies on impregnating women to create children linked to his home dimension.
His complex history includes an affair with the mutant Mystique, whom he met while she was married to a wealthy castle lord named Christian Wagner. This relationship led to the birth of Kurt Wagner, later known as Nightcrawler. Azazel's influence extends across various timelines and iterations, including his role as a member of the Hellfire Club in the film X-Men: First Class and his eventual arrival on the mutant nation of Krakoa. Despite his immense power, which includes mind manipulation, energy projection, and spell-casting, he has faced numerous defeats, including being killed by a demonic version of Nightcrawler known as the Bamf Dragon.
The character's legacy is marked by his status as one of the oldest mutants, though his narrative role has shifted significantly across different writers and media. While some rankings place him among the most evil or powerful villains in the Marvel universe, his fate remains tied to the chaotic nature of mutant history. From being experimented on by Bolivar Trask to serving as a Minister of Death in the Age of Apocalypse, Azazel remains a persistent, if often thwarted, force of nature within the Marvel multiverse.
