In short: Balaji Srinivasan, a former Coinbase CTO and venture capitalist, argues that technology allows for a digital exit from existing nations. By crowdfunding land and building startup societies, he believes online communities can eventually achieve diplomatic recognition, creating a new form of governance he calls the network state.

Srinivasan’s vision is rooted in the concept of exit, an idea inspired by economist Albert O. Hirschman. While traditional reform relies on voice—remaking systems from within—Srinivasan advocates for leaving and building something entirely new. He first introduced these ideas in a 2013 talk, 'Silicon Valley’s Ultimate Exit,' and later formalized the concept in his 2022 book, The Network State. The book describes a process where digital communities aggregate online, crowdfund physical territory, and eventually seek international legitimacy.

The movement has gained traction, with the Financial Times reporting approximately 120 startup societies by 2025. Srinivasan has actively pursued these ideas, launching The Network School in 2024. Initially based in Malaysia, the school relocated to Kazakhstan in 2026 after facing administrative shutdowns. His approach is polarizing; supporters see it as a well-conceived experiment in future governance, while critics have labeled it 'neocolonialist' or 'millenarian.'

Beyond his political theory, Srinivasan is a prominent figure in cryptocurrency and tech investment. He co-founded Counsyl, which was acquired for $375 million in 2018, and served as the first CTO of Coinbase. His public profile is marked by bold, often controversial actions, such as a 2023 bet that Bitcoin would reach $1 million in 90 days—a move he described as a warning about U.S. banking fragility. Having renounced his U.S. citizenship in 2023, he now identifies as a citizen of Singapore, continuing to push for the integration of digital citizens into physical, blockchain-enabled territories.
