Halsey created a dystopian desert wasteland to escape her own real-life mental struggles
In short: When Halsey released her debut album Badlands in 2015, she was not just singing pop songs. She was constructing a fictional, captive society to serve as a physical metaphor for a lonely mind. This concept album became a massive commercial success, eventually reaching double Platinum status in the United States.
Released on August 28, 2015, through Astralwerks, Badlands established Halsey as a significant voice in electropop, dark pop, and synth-pop. The album was written entirely by Halsey at age 19, with Norwegian producer Lido serving as the executive producer. The project was heavily influenced by post-apocalyptic cinema, specifically films like The Fifth Element. Halsey envisioned the titular Badlands as a desert-surrounded city where inhabitants were kept captive, a setting she used to process her personal psychological challenges. She believed that even within this metaphor of imprisonment, there remained a sense of hope that another destination existed.
The album's commercial performance was robust, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200 with 115,000 equivalent units. By December 2017, the project had surpassed one billion streams on Spotify, and it was eventually certified double Platinum by the RIAA for moving two million units in the United States. Its success extended globally, reaching the top ten in countries including Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Despite this, critical reception was mixed; while some reviewers praised her knack for sticky imagery, others, such as Nathan Reese of Pitchfork, argued the album felt calculated and lacked subversive originality.
The legacy of the project continued long after its initial release. In 2025, Halsey celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the album with the release of Badlands (Decade Edition Anthology). This reissue expanded the original tracklist to include previously unreleased demos like 'Garden' and 'You(th)', as well as live and orchestral versions of earlier material. The anniversary project highlighted the enduring interest in the album's world-building, which had originally been promoted through a world tour and singles like 'Ghost', 'New Americana', 'Colors', and 'Castle'. Even a decade later, the album remains a central pillar of Halsey's discography, reflecting a specific period of artistic development defined by industrial undertones and introspective storytelling.
