How a former teacher's college climbed the ranks of college football
In short: From its origins as a teacher's college to competing in the Mid-American Conference, Ball State's football journey is a story of steady ascent. The Cardinals have navigated various classifications and conferences, eventually breaking a long-standing drought to secure their first sanctioned FBS bowl victory in 2020.
The Ball State Cardinals football program, representing Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, has undergone a significant structural evolution. Originally classified as a teacher's college, the program competed in the National Junior College Athletic Association between 1937 and 1956. Following this, the team was designated as a Small College school until 1972, before moving through Division II in 1973 and Division I-AA in 1975. The program eventually reached the Division I-A (now FBS) level in 1981, with a brief one-year return to Division I-AA in 1982.
In terms of competitive standing, the Cardinals hold a record of 476–455–32, a tally that places them below the top 50 most successful programs in NCAA FBS history. The team currently competes in the West Division of the Mid-American Conference under head coach Mike Uremovich, who took the position on December 4, 2024. Throughout their history, the program has been led by 17 different head coaches, with John Magnabosco securing the most wins with 68, followed by Paul Schudel with 60 and Dave McClain with 46.
The program's postseason history is marked by a significant milestone: until their victory in the 2020 Arizona Bowl, Ball State was one of only eight FBS teams that had never won a sanctioned bowl game. While they have appeared in nine NCAA Division I postseason bowls, they hold a 1–8 record in those contests. Beyond collegiate play, the program has contributed 29 players to the NFL draft, with thirteen active or all-star players listed across various professional leagues as of February 2023.
