The Swedish all-terrain vehicle that conquers snow, bogs, and the world's most remote regions.
In short: Developed in 1974 for the Swedish Army, the Bandvagn 206 is an articulated, tracked carrier capable of traversing extreme landscapes. With over 11,000 units produced, this versatile machine has become a global standard for military operations, search and rescue missions, and even private industrial access in the most unforgiving environments.
The Bandvagn 206, or Bv 206, is a unique all-terrain vehicle consisting of two powered units that move in tandem. Designed to succeed the Volvo Bv 202, the vehicle was engineered to navigate deep snow and bog-lands in northern Sweden. Its design relies on low ground pressure to maintain mobility where traditional vehicles would fail. Beyond its land capabilities, the Bv 206 is fully amphibious, capable of reaching speeds of up to 4.7 kilometres per hour in water.
Since its initial delivery to the Swedish Defence Administration in 1980, the platform has seen widespread adoption. It is used in more than 37 countries, ranging from Antarctica to the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan, where Canadian troops utilized it during Operation Anaconda to mitigate physical exhaustion. The vehicle's modularity is a key feature; it can be adapted into an ambulance, a radio communications hub, an anti-tank platform, or a cargo carrier. The total load capacity is 2,250 kilograms, with an additional 2,500 kilograms possible via a towed trailer.
In the United States, the vehicle is known as the Small Unit Support Vehicle, or SUSV. American military variants have been fitted with 6-cylinder Mercedes diesel engines and specialized fire suppression systems since 1997, following incidents where earlier models experienced engine fires. Beyond military service, the Bv 206 has found a second life in the private sector. Decommissioned units are frequently purchased to access remote oil wells in Alberta, Canada, or to support wildfire fighting efforts, proving that a machine built for the battlefield is equally effective in civilian logistics and emergency response.
