In short: Known as the Land of the Bengals, this South Asian country is one of the most densely populated places on Earth. While its modern borders were forged in the 1971 Liberation War, its history spans centuries of shifting kingdoms, Mughal rule, and a unique cultural synthesis within the Bengal delta.

Bangladesh occupies the eastern portion of the historical Bengal region, a landscape dominated by the deltaic plains of the Padma and Jamuna rivers. This geography is central to the nation's identity, as the country is essentially a flat, low-lying surface of recent alluvium. Most of the land sits less than 30 feet above sea level, making it prone to seasonal inundation during the summer monsoon, when floodwaters can rise over 10 feet in certain areas.

The region's history is a complex tapestry of governance and cultural evolution. For centuries, it was ruled by Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms until Muslim forces overthrew the Senas around 1200 CE, sparking a gradual process of Islamization. This influence reached a peak during the Mughal dynasty between the 16th and 18th centuries, a period when the area gained renown for its fine muslin textiles. In the modern era, the territory was part of British India until the 1947 partition, when it became East Pakistan, separated from the rest of the country by 1,100 miles of Indian territory.

Tensions over linguistic and economic disparities eventually led to the Bangladesh Liberation War. With military support from India, the country emerged as an independent nation in 1971 with Dhaka as its capital. Today, the nation is a unitary multiparty republic. While the landscape is largely defined by its riverine floodplains, it also features higher ground in the northwest and north-center, such as the Barind and Madhupur Tract, as well as the mountainous ridges of the Sylhet and Chittagong Hills in the northeast and southeast.
