In short: Sean Cassidy, known as Banshee, is more than a powerful mutant with a lethal voice. A former Interpol agent and police officer, he brought maturity and tactical expertise to the X-Men. From his origins in an Irish castle to his complex resurrections, his story spans decades of Marvel history.

Created by Roy Thomas and Werner Roth, Banshee first appeared in X-Men #28 in January 1967. Originally conceived as a female character, editor Stan Lee shifted the gender to avoid the optics of a team ganging up on a woman. The character, Sean Cassidy, is the heir to Cassidy Keep in County Mayo, Ireland, and a graduate of Trinity College Dublin. Before joining the X-Men, he served as an Interpol agent, a background that informed his role as a mentor and strategist for younger mutants, including the Generation X team he led alongside Emma Frost.

Banshee’s primary ability is a sonic scream generated by his lungs, throat, and vocal cords. This power allows him to fly at the speed of sound, disorient enemies, or even liquefy targets with concussive force. He also possesses limited psionic abilities that protect him from his own vibrations and allow him to use sonar to map his surroundings. His physiology is vulnerable to conventional injury when his powers are not engaged, and he has faced significant trauma, including the loss of his vocal cords in battle and multiple deaths and resurrections.

Throughout his history, Banshee has been a central figure in key X-Men moments, from the first death of an X-Man to the arrival of the Phoenix. His personal life is marked by his relationship with Dr. Moira MacTaggert and his complex dynamic with his cousin, Black Tom Cassidy. Despite his status as a veteran hero, his life has been fraught with misfortune, including being coerced into acting as a Horseman of Death and being killed by MacTaggert herself. He remains a resilient, albeit troubled, figure in the Krakoan Age.
