In short: Long before modern sports spectacles, Baylor University was busy inventing them. In 1909, the school hosted the world's first 'Homecoming,' featuring a concert, parade, and bonfire. Today, Baylor claims the honor of hosting the largest homecoming parade on the planet.

The Baylor Bears football program has evolved through significant shifts in both venue and identity. After playing on an unnamed field near campus starting in 1898, the team moved to Carroll Field in 1905. It wasn't until December 14, 1914, that the university officially adopted the 'Bears' mascot. The team's home has also changed; after 64 seasons at Floyd Casey Stadium—which was renamed in 1988—the Bears moved to the on-campus McLane Stadium for the 2014 season. The team's home games were played at Carroll Field, situated between Waco Creek and the Carroll Science Building. This location served the squad from 1905 until they transitioned to their new stadium.

The program's history is marked by eras of intense rivalry and unexpected triumphs. Until 2012, the 'Battle of the Brazos' against Texas A&M remained a cornerstone of the Southwest Conference; by 2003, the two sides had faced each other in more than 100 contests. One of the most celebrated moments occurred in 1974, when Grant Teaff led the team to a 34–24 victory over the Longhorns. This win, which followed a 16-game losing streak to Texas, earned the season the nickname 'Miracle on the Brazos.' This victory helped the team secure their first-ever trip to the Cotton Bowl. It was a significant milestone following a long period without conference titles.

Success has often come in waves. The Bears secured Southwest Conference championships in 1915, 1916, 1922, and 1924. After a long drought, they won the conference again in 1974 and 1980. More recently, the 2013 season saw a school-record 11-win regular season and an outright Big 12 title, marking the program's first major bowl appearance in 33 years. This historic 2013 campaign began with an incredible nine-game winning streak. This momentum propelled the squad to a national ranking of number three.
