In short: The Bayraktar TB2 is a medium-altitude, long-endurance combat drone that redefined military tactics. Developed in Turkey after a U.S. export ban, this modular, carbon-fiber aircraft has seen extensive service in conflicts from Libya to Ukraine, proving that a cost-effective, autonomous system can effectively challenge traditional, high-end air defense networks.

The Bayraktar TB2, named after the Turkish word for standard-bearer, was developed by the company Baykar, with significant contributions from Selçuk and Haluk Bayraktar. Its creation was a direct response to a U.S. ban on exporting armed unmanned aerial vehicles to Turkey. Since its maiden flight in August 2014, the platform has become the most produced and export-successful unmanned combat aerial vehicle in the world, currently serving at least 34 countries. By December 2024, the fleet had surpassed 1 million flight hours globally.

Technically, the TB2 is a monocoque, blended-wing body design featuring an inverted V-tail and a pusher-propeller configuration. It relies on a triple-redundant flight control system and avionics, allowing for autonomous operations including taxiing, takeoff, and landing. While early versions depended on imported components like Rotax engines and Wescam sensors, Turkey successfully localized its supply chain following international boycotts. Today, the drone utilizes domestic alternatives such as the Aselsan ASELFLIR-500 sensor system, which provides high-definition imaging for long-range detection.

The drone's impact on military doctrine is significant. During Operation Spring Shield in 2020, Turkish forces used the TB2 to effectively neutralize Syrian air defense systems, including Pantsir and Buk units, a feat that analysts like Francis Fukuyama have cited as the emergence of a new method of war. Despite its combat success, the platform is remarkably affordable, with crowdfunding campaigns in 2022 estimating the unit cost at approximately US$5–5.5 million. This price point is roughly one-sixth that of the U.S.-built Reaper, though the TB2 carries only one-tenth of the Reaper's payload capacity.

Beyond combat, the TB2 has proven its utility in humanitarian crises. During the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake, 37 drones flew over 1,551 hours to provide critical data for search-and-rescue operations. While the platform has faced losses in various conflicts, its ability to integrate into diverse military architectures and its rapid evolution through domestic innovation have cemented its status as a pivotal technology in contemporary defense.
