In short: While traditional aircraft carriers are designed for manned jets, Turkey’s TCG Anadolu represents a pivot toward a new era of naval warfare. It is the first vessel of its kind, specifically engineered to serve as a mobile hub for unmanned aerial vehicles, blending amphibious assault capabilities with drone power.

Commissioned on April 10, 2023, the TCG Anadolu (L-400) was built by the Sedef–Navantia consortium. While it shares a design with Spain's Juan Carlos I, its mission profile is distinct. It serves as a multi-role platform capable of acting as a flagship, a command center, or a heavy-lift amphibious assault ship. The vessel is versatile enough to switch between a 'V/STOL aircraft carrier' configuration—optimized for vertical and short takeoff—and an 'amphibious assault ship' configuration, which allows it to transport up to 29 main battle tanks and 27 amphibious assault vehicles. The ship's evolution was shaped by geopolitical shifts. Originally, Turkey planned a shorter flight deck for helicopters, but pivoted to a full deck with a ski-jump ramp after the U.S. Senate blocked the export of F-35B fighter jets due to Turkey's purchase of the Russian S-400 system. Consequently, the Navy shifted its focus toward domestically produced unmanned aerial vehicles (UCAVs), such as the Bayraktar TB3 and Kızılelma. This transition was validated on November 19, 2024, when a Bayraktar TB3 successfully landed on the ship's deck without using arresting gear—a first for a fixed-wing unmanned aircraft of its class. Technologically, the Anadolu is a hybrid of international design and domestic innovation. While Navantia provided the core design and technology transfer, the ship's weapon systems and the GENESIS-ADVENT combat management system were developed by Turkish firms Aselsan and Havelsan. Its operational reach is significant; it is reported to be capable of sailing from Istanbul to New York and back without refueling, with a maximum range of 9,000 nautical miles at economical speeds.
